Biologics vs. Dermal Fillers: What’s the Difference, and Do You Still Need Both?
By Angelica Chavez, FNP — Owner, The Beauty Fix Med Spa ·…

Regenerative aesthetics have earned a reputation for inconsistent results. Many patients
have heard, or even experienced, that biologics “don’t really work.” But more often than
not, the issue is not the product. It is the placement.
Understanding this distinction is central to how regenerative treatments are approached
at The Beauty Fix.
Biologics are designed to work with the body, supporting the patient’s own tissue to
restore what time and natural volume loss have diminished. They are also unforgiving in
one specific way: they only perform when they are placed in exactly the right tissue
layer.
The face is built in distinct planes — skin, fat, muscle, and the spaces between them. A
biologic placed even slightly too shallow or too deep will not integrate the way it is
intended to. So when a treatment appears not to have worked, the product often never
reached the layer where it could do its job. This is not a reason to dismiss biologics. It is
a reason to demand precision.
This is where ultrasound becomes essential rather than optional. At The Beauty Fix,
diagnostic ultrasound is used with every biologic treatment — not occasionally, and not
only for complex cases.
Ultrasound provides real-time visualization beneath the surface. It allows the provider to
identify the exact tissue layer, map the blood vessels that need to be avoided, and
confirm that product is being placed precisely where it belongs. There is no guessing
and no reliance on surface landmarks alone. This level of accuracy is what allows a
biologic to perform as intended — and it also makes the treatment safer and more
comfortable for the patient.
Renuva. Renuva is an advanced regenerative matrix used to restore lost volume. Rather
than simply filling an area, it provides a scaffold that supports the body in regenerating
its own natural volume over time. It is well suited to areas that have thinned or hollowed,
helping to restore softness and fullness while preserving a natural appearance.
Lipoderma. Lipoderma is another biologic used in volume and contour work, built on
the same principle of working with the body’s own tissue to support natural restoration
where fat loss has left an area looking deflated or aged.
Both fall under the broader category of regenerative aesthetics, alongside advanced
growth factors — treatments designed to support the skin and underlying tissue from
within, rather than masking concerns at the surface.
When biologics are placed correctly, the results are natural, subtle, and uniquely the
patient’s own. “Correctly” always means precise placement, which is why ultrasound is
never optional in this practice. It is what allows the science to do its work.
Patients curious about regenerative treatments — or those who have tried something in
the past and were left unimpressed — are encouraged to schedule a consultation. A
consultation is where the face, the patient’s goals, and the specific needs of the tissue
are assessed, and a personalized plan is created.
